The Mind

The mind is a beautiful thing to waste, as it is also extremely overpowering.

Health and fitness are two thoughts that pass through everyone’s head at one time or another. They are also constantly compromised by other thoughts. As I first began contemplating a life of fitness, there were many issues I had going that pushed me in different directions. Now ask yourself a question, do I have time for the gym?????

What was your immediate response, no, I cannot make it, I work to late, I am a parent. Which was it, be honest with yourself, remember this is still just about you. Now re-evaluate that answer to where you are not thinking from impulse, but from fact. What now, there are twenty four hours a day in which, you may work eight to ten of them maybe less, maybe more, but either way that will leave twelve to sixteen hours a day open. Now ask yourself if there is an hour in those last twelve that you could dedicate to something for you, no one else.

Exercise
is a major outlet for most that are involved in it. As you grind out that cardio workout, you could be releasing the days stress, the frustration of thinking of tomorrow’s agenda, or just completely letting go of it all for sixty minutes to be free and just enjoy the sweat. I release a lot of thought and frustration at the gym and that is my form of therapy, some sit with a stranger hoping for life’s answers to be solved, I sweat it out and have no better feeling than leaving with a sense of accomplishment. When speaking of the mind in terms of the gym, it is always under strenuous activity, each day is a new challenge,
and with every challenge is the chance of failure.

This for me is an exceptional feeling. Getting that last five minutes on the
treadclimb that I didn’t think I could get yesterday, pulling that last curl that I just couldn’t seem to get last week, or even something like making it to the gym six days like I wanted to, not cheating my diet, taking in the correct amount of protein, or most commonly losing those pounds you were trying to get rid of before summer.   Any scenario brings a sense of accomplishment, and that is the growing addiction that is fitness. Don’t let others bother you, don’t be intimidated, if you go to the gym and there are men and women who you see to be in better shape then you, remember they started where you are right now, look at it as motivation to get there. Set little goals for yourself and beat those little goals up because that will keep you interested.

Don’t stare at the scale every day, it is bad for your health. Some weeks you will not see that change you saw the week before and that may discourage you, your body is a fast learner and will adapt quickly to your newly found lifestyle, so be ready to switch it up in anyway.  For instance, if you are doing cardio every day, you will see that drop in weight quick, but after a couple of weeks switch to circuit work or interval training, these will keep your body guessing and help you continue to your goals. Intimidation is one of the hardest things for all of us to overcome, it is always going to be easier to quit or walk away, don’t. Comfort is just as easy to enjoy, but change is usually for the better.

J
ust because you have had a routine for ten years does not mean it is working, maybe it is, but if you have a nice round gut hanging over your belt, or back pain you cannot explain, maybe those are sings of a much needed change. Nothing, including fitness is easy in life, but the rewards of exercise and being fit far outweigh the alternative, so take the challenge, find that hour and go beat yourself up, release some stress and have fun!

A Great way for me to lose myself at the gym is to listen to music , no sorry not the boring elevator music they have at most gyms to please everyone as a mass.  I have an extremely trust worthy iPod that I hold about 3500 songs in.  I know sounds like a lot, but that way I can never run out of music that will keep me interested.  Also they have all styles of armbands and cases to hold on to it, so the Ipod is out of your way during your workout.  I also invest in some really nice headphones to ensure great sound for myself. Here are the ones I use daily, and I have had them for over a year now.
